Christmas in Nashville – Visiting Music City Over the Holidays

Brandon Hall • November 27, 2023

Nashville transforms into a magical wonderland during the holiday season, offering visitors a unique blend of festive cheer, Southern hospitality, and a rich musical heritage. From dazzling decorations to special events, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Nashville during the holidays.

Winters in Nashville tend to be mild, with temperatures ranging from 30°F to 50°F. While snow is not guaranteed, the crisp chill in the air creates a cozy atmosphere, perfect for bundling up to enjoy the holiday lights and Christmas markets. It’s advisable to pack layers, as temperatures can vary, but overall the weather is great for enjoying outdoor activities during this time of year.

Christmas Lights and Decorations

Nashville is decked out with merry holiday lights all over town and there are several options for immersive light displays. The Holiday Lights at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens is a beloved Nashville tradition, with a mile-long walking path winding through over a million lights decorating the gardens, and kiosks serving seasonal drinks and snacks along the way. A holiday market and festive holiday decor in the Cheekwood Mansion make this experience one of the best ways to experience the Christmas spirit in Nashville. This fun holiday event typically runs from the week before Thanksgiving to the first week in January.

If you want to admire Christmas lights indoors, stop by the Gaylord Opryland Resort , where the expansive atrium is covered in Christmas lights and water fountain shows take place between 6-9pm each night in December. This Atrium Christmas show is free to enter, and there is also a free outdoor light display on the Magnolia Lawn.

For something a little different, check out the Nashville Zoolumination , the country’s largest Chinese Lantern festival, with over 1,000 lighted silk lanterns on display. This display is lit up nightly from 5-9pm typically from the week before Thanksgiving through the first week in January, then it moves to Thursday-Sunday through the early part of February.

Nashville Holiday Events

Nashville hosts a myriad of special events throughout the holiday season. For those who appreciate the arts, the Nashville Ballet presents enchanting performances of The Nutcracker throughout December, and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center brings Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol to the stage. The Nashville Symphony has several special performances during the holiday season, from accompanying big name guest artists to performing music scores live to beloved holiday films.

Music enthusiasts can revel in the Grand Ole Opry’s Christmas Shows , where top-notch artists perform holiday songs alongside classic country hits. The Ryman Auditorium, known as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” also hosts special Christmas concerts throughout the holiday season, with world-class artists putting a holiday spin on their music, and even an opportunity to see Santa in this iconic auditorium. A unique country music experience is waiting aboard the General Jackson Showboat, an historic steamboat hosting a Victorian-style theater, where visitors can enjoy a Christmas Cruise dinner show celebrating the Christmas music of legendary Tennessee musical artists.

There are a few holiday markets and pop-ups starting in late November where you can find Christmas gifts and seasonal items from local artisans. The Nashville Holiday Market kicks off the weekend after Thanksgiving with a focus on local crafts and vintage Christmas decor. The East Nash Holiday Bash and Acme’s Holiday Market are free events in early December, with festive cocktails offered while you browse a curated holiday market. If you are looking for other places to find that perfect gift, check out what the shopping districts of Nashville have to offer.
